Scripps Community Outreach for Public Education

During my PhD program I was a co-coordinator for the Scripps Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program. Through SCOPE, I ran over 35 facility tours of the Hubbs Experimental Aquarium, Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, and Scripps Coastal Reserve, providing lessons on geology and tide-pool ecology. Virtual versions of several of these tours can be found on YouTube along with other curated educational content.

More information about this type of Outreach Initiative and how to replicate this model at your own institution can be found through the SCOPE website or in our publication in the journal Connected Science Learning.

Other outreach events

I have participated in over 15 individual outreach events outside of SCOPE and am always happy to connect with my local community over the joy of research and scientific discovery. If you would like to chat about polar oceanography in your classroom or community event, please don’t hesitate to get in contact!
